Music is an outlet. It is not just notes on paper. An outlet for creativity, and a way to let out any and all thoughts and emotions. Inspiration may come in waves, but determination is constant. “Play on” resonates with me because if I’m having a tough day, it’s like a reminder that I have an outlet. I have something in my life that I can put my heart and soul into and during the pandemic has been keeping me sane.

To me, playing on means continuing to persist through the challenges of distance learning, as well as keeping true to yourself and why you decided to play music in the first place. I personally enjoy playing music because it brings me a sense of serenity in my day-to-day life, and as long as you remember the reason you decided to pick up your instrument, then nothing else matters.

I think it means to be driven by your interest in music. Despite difficult circumstances, continuing to do something that interests you and you enjoy is always rewarding. Similarly, playing music in this new environment is different, but still very rewarding. I feel that my interest in music has grown despite the challenges of this year because of the way that we have had a wonderful music class during online learning. I have learned a lot this year and have really enjoyed playing all the different songs. Because of that, it did not feel like it is too much of a burden to “play on” because I am enjoying playing violin this year.

Throughout my music journey, I have always been interested in playing percussion. However, I was never very skilled when I started off. When I tried to join the middle school band as a percussionist, I failed the audition to get in as one. However, I was still interested in playing as one. Giving up on music wasn’t going to help me do this. I ended up playing as a trumpeter throughout middle school. However, I played percussion for another music group named PYO, and I also found a tutor to help me develop my percussion skills. So when it came time to audition for a percussionist spot in the high school band, I was ready. I made the audition in the end. Later, I would audition for a spot in symphonic band as well, and I would make that audition too. However, near the end of freshman year, the pandemic happened, which caused the music department many hardships. Due to many barriers, and restrictions on group-related activity, the music experience would begin to diminish. However, my interest would not. Playing as a musician had been a really fun and enjoyable experience. I was able to make a lot of friends and memorable moments. If I had quit, all this would disappear and the development I had as a musician would be wasted. So of course, I chose to stay in the band, and continue to play music. That brings us to today. Developments in technology and safety measures have allowed for the music experience to continue once more. Despite the pandemic, the band is still able to keep an enjoyable experience. I’m still playing for the band, and I wish to continue my journey as a musician. So what does it mean to Play On? I think it means to continue to do what you want to do, even if a situation makes it seem impossible. Even if the situation tries to prevent you from doing something, keep looking for opportunities to continue what you want to do.
